Rice breeding in Zhejiang and Shanghai has a long history and ob-tained remarkable achievements. Since the start of selection and improve-ment of rice varieties in the 1930s, a large number of rice varieties have been bred and popularized, which have made great contributions to rice production in Zhejiang and Shanghai.This book outlined the cultivation regionalization, the process of rice variety improvement and the status of rice germplasm resources in Zhejiang and Shanghai.It mainly introduced 332 newly bred rice varieties since the establishment of the Peopleís Republic of China, including 122 conventional and 61 hybrid indica va-rieties, and 122 conventional and 27 hybrid japonica varieties.The selec-tion, popularization and application of these new varieties have played an important role in rice production in Zhejiang and Shanghai.This book also introduced 13 famous rice breeders who made outstanding contributions to rice breeding in Zhejiang, Shanghai, and even in the whole country.For the convenience of readers'reference, all varieties were arranged according to the order of Chinese phonetic alphabet. At the same time, in order to facilitate readers to access simplified variety information, a variety index was attached at the end of the book, including category, approval number and variety right number etc.。
